Welcome from the Rector
You are home in the presence of la Virgencita.
Ihave been amazed by the generosity of the people who venerate la Virgencita. The Basilica is a place where people encounter God in many ways — through His Word at every Mass, through Reconciliation, and in receiving the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith. Many also encounter Him simply through the quiet beauty of our campus.
A sanctuary of grace, raised by generations of devotion.
From the miraculous events in México in 1623, through the founding of the original chapel in 1920, the story of San Juan del Valle is a story of devotion that does not fade. In 1970, the world watched as a small plane was driven into the original shrine — and not a single one of the faithful at prayer was harmed. Many regard it still as the great miracle of the Virgencita.
The present Basilica was dedicated in 1980 before fifty thousand faithful. In 1998 the Shrine was named a National Shrine, and in 1999 Pope John Paul II raised it to a Minor Basilica — the highest honor a church may receive from the Holy See. Today she stands among the most-visited Marian shrines in the United States, welcoming more than one million pilgrims each year.
Above the faithful, in glass and morning light, the Basilica holds forty stained-glass windows — twenty Martyrs who gave their lives for Christ, and twenty Mysteries of the Holy Rosary that retrace the life of Our Lord.
Cuarenta vidrieras — veinte Mártires y veinte Misterios del Rosario.
Sub tuum praesidium confugimus,
Sancta Dei Genetrix.
We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God.
Bajo tu amparo nos acogemos, Santa Madre de Dios.
